In this post, I will detail the Marrakech Airport entry and exit procedures, transportation options from the airport to the city, and city transportation.
1. Marrakech Airport
✅ Entry Immigration
At the immigration desk, there are three essential questions you will be asked:
Accommodation, Occupation, and Boarding pass.
✅ Exit Immigration
It is recommended to arrive at least 2.5 hours before your flight. Airport procedures: Luggage check → Automated immigration check → Security check → Passport check → Final verification of boarding pass and passport. The entire process takes around 1 hour.
2. Transportation from the Airport to the City & Fares
✅ Taxi
- Fare: The cost is between 100-160 Dirhams depending on the distance. For example, the distance to Jemaa el-Fnaa Square is about 6-7 km, costing around 120 Dirhams.
- Taxi fares are typically fixed, but some drivers may try to overcharge, so be prepared to negotiate.
- Pick-up Point: You can easily find taxis just outside the airport exit at the parking area.
✅ Hotel Shuttle
Hotel shuttles usually cost around 150-200 Dirhams, and advance booking might be required.
✅ Airport Shuttle Bus (L19)

- Fare: 30 Dirhams one-way, 50 Dirhams round trip.
- Timetable: It operates every 30 minutes, from 6 AM to 11:30 PM daily.
- Duration: The trip to the city takes about 30 minutes, but it can take up to 1 hour due to traffic.
- Route: The shuttle connects the airport with Jemaa el-Fnaa Square, and you can catch it at the open area directly in front of the airport exit. The bus stop is marked with an 'alsa' sign.
- Drop-off Point: The bus drops off at the bus stop near Jemaa el-Fnaa Square, which is clearly marked and easy to find.
✅ Regular Bus
- Fare: 5 Dirhams.
- There are other bus routes available from the airport, but they are not reflected clearly on Google Maps, and it may be hard to find the bus stop. You may need to ask locals or follow others at the bus stop to board the right bus.
3. City Transportation
1️⃣ Horse-Drawn Carriages
- Fare: 80-100 Dirhams. You can usually negotiate with the driver to lower the price.
2️⃣ Regular Taxis
Taxis in Marrakech can be tricky to navigate. Foreigners may encounter overcharging, so be sure to ask the driver to turn on the meter or negotiate the price before getting in.
✅ Taxi Types
- Petit Taxis: These are used within the city, have meters, and can carry up to three passengers. However, some drivers may refuse to use the meter and ask for negotiations.
- Grand Taxis: These are typically used for intercity travel and can carry up to six passengers. They don't use meters, and fares are negotiable.
💡Dealing with Refusal to Use the Meter:
Petit taxis (small taxis) are required by law to use the meter, but some drivers may refuse. If this happens, you can remind them that the law requires them to use the meter and that you may need to report them to the tourist police or simply refuse the ride and find another taxi. The tourist police number is +212 524 38 46 01.
✅ Taxi Fare
The base fare is usually around 7 Dirhams, with an additional 10 Dirhams at night. Without negotiating, the fare may be quite high, generally 50-100 Dirhams.
✅ Hailing a Taxi
You can either hail a taxi on the street or ask your hotel or restaurant to call one for you.
✅ Payment
Most taxis only accept cash payments, although some drivers might accept Euros. It's best to pay in Dirhams.
3️⃣ Bus
- Fare: 5 Dirhams.
- Buses are not always well-marked on Google Maps, and you may have difficulty finding bus stops. It’s a good idea to ask locals for directions when trying to catch a bus. The service isn't always strict, so flexibility is needed.
4. Traffic Situation
- Pedestrian paths are available mainly on main roads, but areas like the old town or markets can be very congested with horse-drawn carriages, donkeys, motorbikes, and cars.
- Traffic lights are rare, and while crosswalks are sometimes available, you should be cautious when crossing the road. It’s essential to be aware of your surroundings when walking through busy areas.
